| NEW YORK: Throughout most of baseball history there have been far fewer Yankee killers than Yankee victims. Paul Byrd can count himself among the latter group, inasmuch as he has a career record of 1-5 with and 4.75 ERA against the Bronx Bombers, including Thursday's 6-3 loss that denied the Indians their first sweep of the New Yorkers in 19 years. |

| <p><p>Like many veteran pitchers, Paul Byrd has diminishing stuff but superior knowledge on how to use it. There isn't much room for error. Byrd is either very good or his numbers are very bad.</p>
<p>Thursday it was more a case of the latter, as he gave up three home runs in a 6-3 loss to the Yankees. Byrd relies on precise control of his pitches in order to make up for his lack of one dominating pitch.</p>
<p>He won 15 games last year using that formula. He's off to a slow start this season, and one of the reasons is his inability to keep the ball in the ballpark.</p>

Jason Giambi and the sluggish New York Yankees suddenly turned sluggerish. The Yankees played home run derby Thursday, with Giambi, Johnny Damon, Robinson Cano and Wilson Betemit connecting in a 6-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians that prevented a three-game sweep. "There were big hits up and down the lineup," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.
